Honing to shave ready – $15

Posted by holli4pirating on February 17, 2011

Prices start at $15 for standard honing of a full hollow razor, with extra fees for heavier grinds, chips, frowns, etc.  Your razor will be honed to a shave ready edge, starting at whatever stage is required and progressing through the finisher of your choice and stropping on leather.  You may choose which finisher you would like me to use, or I can choose for you.  At the moment, I have: coticule, vintage Thuringian, Asagi.  I also have a hanging strop pasted with chromium oxide, which can be used instead of or after any finisher.

I cannot commit to a price for honing a razor until I am actually able to see it and figure out how much work it will take, but I can provide an estimate before you decide to ship your razor or razors to me.  The better/more accurate your description, the more accurate my estimate.  When your razor or razors arrive, I will contact you with an actual price, and I will not begin to hone you razor or razors until I hear back from you with a confirmation that the price is acceptable.

At this time, I am only honing “western” razors, as they are the only kind of razors I know how to hone.  I will not hone razors that are unsuitable for shaving, such as Kriegar, Master, or Zeepk “razors.”

Prices do not include return shipping.  I will ship your razor back to you via any method you choose and at your expense; I recommend USPS First Class in a small box.  Should you choose not to have your package tracked and/or insured, I will not be held responsible for lost packages and/or damage resulting from shipping (I do pack razors carefully).

Please contact me via email at holli4pirating@gmail.com to inquire about honing services.

Bevel Setting – $10

Posted by holli4pirating on February 17, 2011

Prices start at $10 for bevel setting through the 1k, with extra fees for heavier grinds, chips, frowns, etc.  Your razor will have its bevel set, which will allow it to cut arm hairs and be ready to progress to the 3-5k stage.  This option will provide you with a benchmark for what a set bevel feels and cuts like, which can be useful if you are just learning to set bevels on your own.  It can also give you a chance to work on the mid range and final stages of the honing process without having to set the bevels yourself.

Honing to 8k-

Prices start at $15 for honing through the 8k, with extra fees for heavier grinds, chips, frowns, etc.  Your razor will be honed to a shave ready edge, but I will not use a finishing hone.  This option will provide you with a benchmark for what an edge off an 8k can feel like, which can be useful if you are just learning to hone on your own.  It can also give you the chance to try your own hand at finishing your razor.

For all services:

I will ship your razor back to you via any method you choose and at your expense.  I recommend small, flat rate USPS boxes, especially if you have more than one razor, and should you choose not to have your package tracked and/or insured, I will not be held responsible for lost packages and/or damage resulting from shipping (I do pack razors carefully).

I will hone your razor with as much care and on the same hones that I would use for my personal razors, and with the same hones I use on my own razors.  I will also test your razors as I would my own to ensure they are honed to the best of my ability.  If your razor is honed to shave ready, I will test shave with it and strop it prior to shipping it back to you.  If your razor is honed through the 8k, I will test shave with it and strop it prior to shipping it back to you.  If your razor has its bevel set, I will ensure it can cut arm hairs prior to sending it back to you.  You should strop your razor prior to shaving with it; a razor should always be stropped before shaving.  If you are not experienced with stropping, please be very careful when stropping; if you are not an experienced shaver, please be very careful with your shave prep and shave technique.  Poor stropping and/or poor shaving, as well as generally poor handling of a razor, can damage the razor’s edge.

If you are not satisfied with the way your razor shaves, please do not hesitate to contact me to resolve the situation.
