George Wostenholm Pipe – $60

Posted by holli4pirating on September 29, 2010

13/16, 3/4 hollow, muted square point, humpback.  This razor is bigger than most of these etched Wosty’s that you’ll find, so that is pretty cool I think.  There is some staining and pitting, but the etch on the blade was pretty shallow already so I didn’t want to go and buff her.  As such, she remains a razor with character.

I made these scales for another razor, but that didn’t work out; they are black acrylic with a white acrylic spacer.  They are a little rough around the edges, but all the curves are smooth and the wedge fits in snugly.  Brass pins and washers.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the razor centers into the scales.

This razor is shave ready.

Boker Red Injun 101 – $50

Posted by holli4pirating on September 29, 2010

9/16, full hollow, square point, jimps top and bottom.  This razor looks like someone worked on her (not me), as there is a bit of a satin finish.  There is some light staining and pitting, and to be honest those pits on the front are on the deep side, but high enough that they are just cosmetic.

I made these scales and had intended them for another razor, but that didn’t work out; white acrylic with a black acrylic spacer.  They are a little rough around the edges, but all the curves are smooth and the wedge fits in snugly.  Brass pins and washers.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the razor centers into the scales.

Asprey (New Bond Street) – $100

Posted by holli4pirating on September 29, 2010

6/8, quarter hollow, oblique notch, shoulderless grind, jimps top and bottom.

I restored and rescaled this razor.

The finish isn’t a perfect mirror – there is some light pitting and staining left, and there are light scratches.  If you look close, you’ll see it; if you just glance it’ll look like a mirror finish.  I was very careful when buffing around the edge, which is why there is more pitting/staining there, but the result is that I maintained the original edge profile and hone wear remains light and rather even.

The scales are black acrylic with an ivory acrylic wedge.  This is my best set yet; the beveling is smooth and even, the curve of the scales is smooth, and the wedge is snug.  I went with brass rod and stainless steel washers to give a little accent.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the razor centers into the scales.

Boker Red Injun 101 RP – $85

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

5/8, full hollow, round point, jimps top and bottom, slight smile.  This razor is Wednesday from a set, and the marking on the spine is in fantastic shape (I forgot to take a photo of that).  Unfortunately, I do not have the other razors in this set.  Pivot is snug, she stands on her own, and she centers on closing.  Scales are straight.  On the back there are a bunch of numbers lightly (barely visible in person) scratched in.  I have no idea what they mean.  I showed Joed, and he guessed that it may be some kind of code (decoder ring not included :-) )

Wester Bro’s Manganese – $45

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

9/16, full hollow, square point, black tang/tail/spine.  She has some light staining, but the black is perfect and there is minimal hone wear.  I didn’t take her to the buffer because I didn’t want to risk the black and I don’t like to buff such small full hollows.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the blade centers into straight scales.

Wade & Butcher Celebrated Hollow Ground – $65

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

13/16, 1/3 hollow (between half and quarter hollow), barber’s notch, black horn scales.

Not the prettiest W&B, but shaves just as nicely as any other.  Shallow pitting under the staining, which I left to preserve the etch – taking off one would likely remove the other, but it could be done.

The pitting is near the edge, but the whole bevel is clean, so it will never be a problem; it is only cosmetic.

The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the blade centers into straight scales.

Silver King – $55

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

13/16, full hollow, square point, bolsters.  Though the stamp on this razor is very worn and despite the shallow pitting under the staining, I am convinced this razor was NOS before I honed her.  She took a bevel right away and hone wear is practically non existent.  I was impressed by how smoothly this razor shaved – I could easily mistake it for one of the top makes.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the blade centers into straight scales.

Rogers Sheffield – $40

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

5/8, 3/4 hollow, square point, jimps bottom.  This is not a typo, she’s a William Rogers (not a Joseph Rodgers) from Sheffield.  The blade has a nice finish, but there is some very shallow pitting under the staining on the back.  The tail is longer than normal, and holds two fingers quite comfortably.  Scales are synthetic and made to look like bamboo (though they remind me of a skeleton finger).  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and the blade centers into straight scales.

Le Minet – $60

Posted by holli4pirating on September 24, 2010

11/16, full hollow, round point, jimps top and bottom.

I’ve never seen one of these before, but I’m assuming she is a French razor (the name translates to “The Kitty”), and relatively young.  Nice wash on the blade, with a golden cat.

Whatever she is, she’s a fine shaver and a looker too.  The pivot is a touch loose, but snugs up around 70 degrees, where the blade stands open, and the blade centers into straight scales.

This razor is shave ready, and comes with the original coffin.
