S R Droescher Karbono – $35

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

5/8, full hollow, square point.  Appears to have factory grind marks and a patina over that.  Extra staining at the toe.  Logo in the scales is a nice touch, but it’s a little worn; appears to be just written on as opposed to etched.  Pivot is snug, blade stands open, and she centers into straight scales.

Tennis Facharbeit 80 – $75

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

9/16, full hollow, round point, jimps top.

If I’m not mistaken, this blade would have had goldwash on the blade, but now it’s just a nice looking black etch. The tang and tail are darker, but not as dark as in the photos; more like a light patina. The blade is in fantastic shape, though the toe is slightly rounded. The logo on the scales is a nice bonus, too.

The scales have a slight outward bow, but that has no effect on anything. Closed, she is just shy from snug, but she’s snug and stands open around 30 degrees. Never any wobble, and she centers on her own. I can tap her tight for you on request.

If this blade was any bigger, she would be mine without a doubt; I would put this razor up against a Puma or Filly any day of the week.

Fritz Bracht Dovo – $110

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

11/16, full hollow, jimps top and bottom.

If you have not tried a Fritz Bracht Dovo, it’s high time you did. These are the razors upon which Dovo’s reputation was established, and with good reason.

This one is nearly perfect; just a few spots of isolated staining. That darkness on the back of the tail is NOT like it looks in the photo. There are some small spots of staining, but the area only looks dark because it didn’t catch the light. With a casual glance, that area looks mint.

The pivot is a touch loose when closed, but never wobbles and centers on her own. She snugs up around 60 degrees and stays snug from there on. I can tighten up the pivot for you if you’d like.

This one comes with the original box; the gold Dovo paper is peeling a bit at the edges, but no tears or anything.

C V Heljestrand – $55

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

5/8, full hollow, rounded square point, jimps bottom.  Some shallow pitting and staining on the blade, with more staining on the spine and the bottom jimps.  Very minimal hone wear, though.  Scales must be replacements, and IMO not too flattering.  Take off $5 if you buy her with a scale kit, or I’ll rescale her for $30 (black, white, ivory, transparant acrylics).  Pivot is snug, the blade stands open, but she closes to the front scale, so guiding is a good idea.

Joh. Engstrom – $35

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

5/8, rounded square point, frameback grind, jimps bottom, thin tang.  Staining an pitting on the blade, but she took a clean bevel and there should never be a problem with that in the future either.  The tail is slightly bent towards the stamp side, but it’s not really noticeable and, aside from rubbing a little on the inside of the scale, it doesn’t affect anything.  Pivot is snug, she stands open, and the razor centers into straight scales.

C W Dahlgren – $35

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

9/16, rounded square point, frameback grind, jimps bottom, thin tang.  There are some parts of the blade with a vertical satin finish and other parts are matte.  I have no idea how that happened, but I left it alone.  There is some staining/patina on the blade and tang.  The pivot is snug, the blade stands open, and she centers into straight scales.

Wade & Butcher 8+/8 – $175

Posted by holli4pirating on April 11, 2011

8+/8, half or 3/4 hollow, muted barber’s notch.

I wouldn’t say that I restored this blade, because I wanted to remove the least amount of metal possible. There are remains of grind marks (factory or regrind? I think regrind), and there are spots of shallow pitting left behind too. It’s one of those where it looks like there is staining, but that is really the shadows from the pits (on the blade, I mean – there is some staining on the tang still). If you like your vintage razors to look vintage, this is the type of blade you’ll like.

Scales are the classic black horn, though as you can see the front scale cracked through the wedge pin. I has been glued (not by me) and is totally stable. I thought it better to keep it than rescale, since there is no structural weakness. But if you’d like her rescaled, I’ll do it for $30.

The blade is just barely not able to stand open, and she centers on closing into straight scales.

Fenny / Tally-Ho – Eagle Etch and Pressed Horn – $250

Posted by holli4pirating on April 4, 2011

13/16, quarter hollow, barber’s notch.

In my opinion, this is a truly special razor. She has the eagle etch plus pressed horn Fenny scales, a combination I have never seen before. On top of that, there is what I believe to be a beautiful patina on the entire blade. There are some darker marks where the razor touches the scales, but I went with the vintage look during the cleaning and left that to preserve the etch and patina.

The scales have some bites out of the front and a surface crack (doesn’t go all the way through the scale, so nothing to worry about if properly treated) at the back pivot. I applied neatsfoot oil to rehydrate the scales, but did not sand or buff them at all. You could, if you want, to make them shine a bit more, but I think they are beautiful as is.

I honed without tape, because the hone wear was evident, so I thought using tape would make the razor look worse.

The pivot is a touch loose, and the scales have the slightest bow outwards. But the razor snugs up nicely in the shaving position and centers on her own without any wobble at all.
